The Steel Processing Automation Research Center (SPARC) was founded on September 1, 1995 with financial support from the POSCO group. It has two primary goals. One is to educate students in the field of system control and automation toward the Masters degree program in the Department of Electrical Engineering at POSTECH in order to provide high-tech engineers to POSCO. The other is to carry out research and development works for new technologies in steel-making-process control and automation and eventually to contribute to POSCO. Even though SPARC is in early development, 8 professors by Department of Electrical Engineering and fifteen graduate students are working on various industrial research projects, funded mostly by POSCO. SPARC is also developing curriculum which specializes in steel-making-process control and in establishing experimental laboratories with equipped for educational programs and research.
